ENTRY NAME: CULTURAL AUTHORITARIANISM VS THE INDIVIDUAL

When I look at extremely fanatic left and right wing people on the internet that's preoccupied with the 'culture war', they are very similar to one another. Both groups, by engaging in this 'culture war' that essentially has no winner or loser, are espousing a form of cultural authoritarianism: the idea that 'my beliefs/culture' is the only right way of viewing the world and people who think otherwise is wrong and immoral. This, combined with the mob mentality exacerbated by social media, is causing people to be more extreme as a reaction to one another.
In a political and cultural climate of today, with the rise of 'cultural authoritarianism' on the internet, the best thing I can do is to step away from the pointless discourse of the culture war, and remind myself to avoid categorizing any individual, even someone I heavily disagree with, into a single 'group', and learn to accept different opinions and views. I believe that this pheomenon of cultural authoritarianism directly clashes with the spirit of individualism that is one of my key values.
